The foreskin is cut during the circumcision procedure to allow for free retraction behind the glans penis (the conical head). Without circumcision, the foreskin, which consists of a double layer of skin, more or less entirely covers the glans penis. There are several glands located beneath the foreskin's inner layer that release smegma, a material that resembles cheese. If cleaning and hygiene are not practiced, an accumulation of smegma behind the foreskin may cause significant discomfort and act as the source of a quite pungent scent. After a circumcision, the skin of the penis is also exceedingly delicate. Contact with the baby's nappy or the ammonia in urine might occasionally irritate the skin. Most of the time, treating these minor issues with petroleum jelly while changing diapers for a few days can solve them. After a few days, they will resolve on their own.
